What's on the horizon for criminal justice reform in Ohio?

Updated: Apr 28, 2023

“There is a broad consensus in this country that people who commit crimes — non-violent offenses — because of the fact that they’re an addict, we all want to see them succeed. We want them to get clean, stay clean and be good members of society,” - Ohio Governor Mike DeWine

Governor Mike Dewine has signed a new bill aimed at giving Ohioans a second chance.

House Bill 1, scheduled to go into effect later this year, includes changes that allow people dealing with addiction the option to receive treatment instead of a criminal record.

Additional Bill Highlights:

  1. Incarcerated women will no longer be required to wear shackles while giving birth

  2. Ohioans are provided a quicker path to sealing conviction records for certain crimes

  3. Record-sealing eligibility is expanded to include more crimes
